What is random video chat?

Random video chat is a live call between two people who did not choose each other. A matching system takes everyone who is waiting, pairs two of them and opens a camera-to-camera connection. Nobody browses profiles first. The first thing you learn about the other person is how they look, how they sound and what they say in the opening seconds.

That puts it somewhere quite different from the video calls you already make:

The appeal is the unknown. The next call could be someone cooking dinner nine time zones away, a night-shift worker on a break, or someone who wants to practice their English on a real person. If it goes nowhere, nobody owes anybody an explanation. One tap and you both move on.

How does a random video call on ChatWS work?

1. Fill in the form at the top of this page: your gender, your age, and whether you want to chat with women or men.

What can you control, and what stays random?

Random does not have to mean blind. ChatWS gives you a few levers and leaves the rest to chance.

• Who you hope to meet. The start form asks whether you want to chat with women or men.
• Where they are. Karma unlocks matching filters for gender and for country, so you can narrow your matches to people in one country, for example.
• How long a call lasts. There is no timer. A conversation runs for as long as both of you want it to.
• Who you never see again. Block and next, under the flag icon above the other person's video, skips them and makes sure you are not paired again.
• What stays random: the actual person, their mood, their room and what they feel like talking about. That part is the point.

Karma is earned, never bought. You collect it by chatting and by coming back, and there is no shop, no coins and no premium tier where you could buy more. If you switch between a phone and a laptop, an optional free account carries your karma across. You never need that account to chat.

What do you need for free random video chat?

• A camera and a microphone. Both are required, because the other person sees and hears you just as you see and hear them. There is no text-only mode, though you can type whenever you like.
• A current browser on Android, iPhone or a laptop. There is nothing to install and no app to find in a store.

Is stranger video chat safe?

• ChatWS does not record or store chats, video or messages. Video and audio go between the two browsers, directly where the network allows and otherwise through an encrypted relay that stores nothing.
